About Old Cataract, Aswan
Old Cataract, Aswan was built by Thomas Cook in 1899 and opened in 1900 on a pink granite outcrop above the Nile, directly facing Elephantine Island. Its terracotta-red Victorian facade has received royalty, statesmen and writers for more than a century: Agatha Christie stayed here, and the 1978 film of Death on the Nile was shot on location. Long run by Accor as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, the hotel passed to Mandarin Oriental management in May 2026.
The hotel has two parts: the historic Palace Wing and the 1960s Nile Wing tower. The Nile Wing is closed for renovation until 2027, so guests currently stay in the Palace, where rooms and suites combine French-style furnishings with Egyptian detailing and many look over the river. Saraya serves Levantine and Mediterranean cuisine, while The Terrace, set along the Nile, offers all-day dining, sunset drinks and a celebrated afternoon tea with views of Elephantine Island.
Gardens lead to an outdoor infinity pool with its own pool bar, and felucca sailings, Nubian villages and Philae Temple are all close by. Some wellness facilities, such as the sauna and hot tub, are affected by the works. The hotel suits couples, honeymooners and travellers who value history and atmosphere over resort-style entertainment.
