Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise: What Each Day Looks Like
By Panda Travel Egypt 3 min read
A Luxor to Aswan Nile cruise lasts four nights and stops at Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. Here is the route day by day, and how the 3, 4 and 7-night sailings differ.
A Luxor to Aswan Nile cruise lasts four nights. Day one is Karnak and Luxor Temple, day two the Valley of the Kings and the West Bank before sailing south through the Esna lock, day three the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, and day four Aswan (the High Dam, Philae and a felucca) before you disembark on the fifth morning.
A Luxor to Aswan Nile cruise is four nights on the river, with an Egyptologist leading every visit ashore. It is the centre of most first trips to Egypt: Pyramids and Nile Escape Program builds its middle four nights around it. Here is how the days run.
The route, day by day
Day 1: Board in Luxor, then Karnak and Luxor Temple
Board before lunch. In the afternoon, the Temples of Karnak, the largest temple complex of ancient Egypt with the 134 columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall, then Luxor Temple as its lights come on.
Day 2: The West Bank, then sail to Edfu
The Valley of the Kings, the terraced Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. The ship sails south through the lock at Esna in the afternoon. Our Luxor guide covers these sights in more detail.
Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo
The Temple of Horus at Edfu, the best-preserved temple in Egypt, by horse carriage in the morning; the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris at Kom Ombo in the afternoon.
Day 4: Aswan, with the High Dam, Philae and a felucca
The High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple on its island, then a felucca around Kitchener's Island. Optionally, Abu Simbel at dawn.
Day 5: Disembark
Breakfast on board, then on to Aswan airport or the next part of the trip.
3, 4 or 7 nights?
- 4 nights, Luxor to Aswan: the full route, ending where Abu Simbel is closest.
- 3 nights, Aswan to Luxor: the same temples, sailing with the current.
- 7 nights, Luxor to Aswan and back: a slower week with a day of sailing and time in Aswan.
A day on board
Most visits ashore start early, before the heat, so the rhythm of a cruise is a morning at a temple, lunch on board while the ship sails, and an afternoon on the sun deck watching the villages and palm groves of the riverbank go by. Most Nile cruises are full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on the ship, and the evenings often include a talk from the Egyptologist or an Egyptian night.
Choosing a boat
Ships differ in size, level and what is on board: a pool, a spa, how many cabins. The Oberoi Zahra carries no more than fifty guests; see all our Nile cruises to compare.
| Nile cruise ship | Dahabiya | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Larger, several decks | A small sailing boat with a handful of cabins |
| On board | Pool, sun deck, often a spa and a gym | A shaded deck and a lounge |
| Moorings | The main landing stages in each town | Quieter places along the bank |
| Pace | The classic route, on a set timetable | Slower, under sail when the wind allows |
What to pack for a Nile cruise
- Light clothes for the day and a layer for the evening on deck, because winter nights on the river are cool.
- A swimsuit for the sun-deck pool.
- Comfortable shoes for temple floors and the steps at landing stages.
- A hat, sunglasses and sun cream: the deck and the temples are both in full sun.

Frequently asked
How long is a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan?
Four nights and five days. Sailing the other way, Aswan to Luxor, is usually three nights because the boat travels with the current.
What is the difference between a Nile cruise and a dahabiya?
A dahabiya is a small sailing boat with only a handful of cabins that moors at quieter places along the bank. A Nile cruise ship is larger, with a pool, a spa and more cabins, and follows the main route between Luxor and Aswan.
Is Abu Simbel included in a Nile cruise?
Usually as an optional early-morning trip from Aswan. Abu Simbel is about three hours south of Aswan by road, or a short flight.
Which is better, Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?
Both visit the same temples. Luxor to Aswan has an extra night and ends in Aswan, which suits a trip that continues to Abu Simbel; Aswan to Luxor is shorter.
